Small Moments Matter - Ep. 02 - If You Can Do It, You Should

An elderly person stands idly out the front of a hardware store. There's a look of reluctance on their face. Their car is in the furthest away parking spaces, and the trolley full of large bags of potting mix is too heavy for them to move.

A mother approaches a set of stairs, juggling her enthused toddler, an overflowing handbag, a bag of groceries and an empty pram. The child said they were too tired to walk when they left the house. Mum doesn't know how she's going to get everything up the staircase.

A group of school-aged kids playing in a backyard can be heard from the footpath. There's high-pitched squeals and sounds of feverish laughter that only childhood fun can create. The soccer ball they're playing with soars over the fence. Their parents warned them - if the ball goes over the fence, the game is over. For the kids, the fun is over.

A man comes scurrying through the lobby of an office building, trying to catch the elevator as the doors begin to close. He has a sweat on his brow and distress on his face. His business shirt is wrinkled and his suit tie sits loosely around his neck. It's 8.58am and the client meeting starts in two minutes. He hates his job. He wishes he could spend more time with his family. His daughter has asked him if he could spend more time at home. He hopes to close this deal so he can take a week off over Christmas, and take his family on their first holiday in three years.

Have you ever felt completely alone despite being surrounded by people?

Have you ever felt like asking for help would be an admission that you failed?

Have you ever wished that you could be there for someone, and forget about all the times you felt like nobody was there for you?

A moment of kindness, an act of compassion, a show of empathy.

Push the trolley. Carry the pram. Throw the ball back. Hold the door open.

Someone needed that today.
